About the area

Bodø sits at the edge of the Vestfjord, where the warm Gulf Stream meets the Arctic and creates one of Europe's richest marine ecosystems. The combination of deep fjords, narrow sounds and exposed coast is what makes Saltstraumen possible: every six hours, 400 million cubic metres of seawater are forced through a 3 km strait, producing the strongest tidal current ever measured.

We depart from the Ramsalt pier in central Bodø and run south past Knaplundsøya into the strait - a 25-minute high-speed cruise each way that lets us spend the bulk of the trip among the whirlpools and along the cliffs where the eagles hunt.
